Advocacy is only one part of the financial literacy question, grass-roots action will encourage change at a higher level. In my policy paper one of the key strategies outlined as a way to boost overall financial literacy was Transition Year (TY) programmes.

Last month Shea McNelis founder of Integrity Seurity gave a talk on his life journey while highlighting financial literacy to TY students in Belvedere College. Before he spoke I talked about financial literacy to preface his talk and encourage deeper understanding of financial concepts.

Another talk is planned in the College for Transition Year Students in October with Dr. Brian Pennie. He has kindly to this talk free of charge.

Furthermore we are in discussion with several schools including Belvedere College about rolling out a Financial Literacy Programme for Transition Year students. These programmes will provide working examples to the government about what can be done to combat the issue of financial illiteracy.
